Thor: The Twilight of the Gods

Well, The Mighty Thor is back again, sporting a new look and some new tools. The teaser for Thor: Ragnarok has dropped and from what we’ve seen this looks like it’ll be a fun time at the movies. It’s got a lot riding on its shoulders because this movie will most likely be the bridge between Guardians of the Galaxy and The Avengers. We know that Infinity War will include all the Guardians, but we need a valid reason for them to leave their neck of the woods and come down to Earth. What better reason than a chance encounter with the Crown Prince of Asgard and everyone’s favourite green rage monster?

So the trailer opens up with one of my favourite framing devices: “You’re probably wondering how I got here. It’s a long story”. From here, we see Cate Blanchett as Hela (The goddess of the underworld) who smashes Mjolnir. That’s right. She crushed it with her bare hands, which shows the power gap between Hela and what we’ve seen so far in the MCU. Anyways, from there, we see her invade Asgard, Thor getting captured and ending up on Sakaar, which is what I’m most excited about. Now Sakaar, is a war world where various people are captured and forced to fight in gladiator style games. This planet is important because it’s the focus of the Planet Hulk storyline, during which The Hulk is banished from Earth and ends up crashing on Sakaar. I don’t want to spoil the ending but it’s actually really good so I’d strongly recommend taking the time to read it. Now with me mentioning The Hulk, it’s a great point to slip into the highlight of this trailer. After seeing Thor’s new look (Which actually works for him a bit better than the L’Oreal hair he was rocking before), a quick shot of Loki flipping his knives and decked out for a fight, we flip over to the arena. We see Thor pulling on his helmet, which is amazing. It’s as close to the wing bucket he has in the comics, without looking ridiculous. As the announcer describes his opponent, out smashes The Hulk, leading Thor to start cheering. As everyone, including Jeff Goldblum’s character Grandmaster and Loki sitting in what can only be described as box seats looks on in shock, Thor drops the best line in the teaser. “We know each other! He’s a friend from work!” We all laugh, Thor and Hulk rush each other and the title card drops.

This trailer was lots of fun and I’m glad that it doesn’t blow the 3rd act….looking directly at you Spidey. However, I have to point out something ridiculous. If you grew up in the 90’s, then at some point you used Word Art. Doesn’t the title look kinda like word art? Especially the font for Ragnarok. Having Immigrant Song as the background music was perfect, because it totally gets you hyped for the fights and makes me think Thor: Ragnarok will definitely earn a place in the Almanac, but what do you think? Leave a comment below and tell us what you’re hoping to see in Ragnarok. Catch you next time – BB
